Grocery & Meals — Planning Made Simple

Meal planning and grocery lists, finally in the same place.

The grocery feature in Family Basecamp connects what you're cooking to what you have to what you need to buy. The list is shared. Anyone in the family can add to it. Kin can help fill the gaps.

Most family grocery systems break down at the same point: when the list is in one place, the meal plan is somewhere else, and what's actually in the fridge is unknown until someone opens it. You either overbuy, forget something, or end up figuring out dinner at 5 PM with nothing that goes together.

Family Basecamp pulls these three things together. The pantry tracker tells you what you have. The meal planner tells you what you're cooking this week. The grocery list collects what you need. They talk to each other.

The pantry

The pantry section has three tabs — fridge, freezer, pantry shelf. You add items manually, or you use the Scan feature: point your phone camera at an open fridge or shelf, and Kin identifies what it sees and adds those items automatically. The scan isn't perfect, but it's faster than typing a full inventory by hand.

Once your pantry is logged, you can tap "What can I make?" and Kin will suggest meals based on what you have, flagging items that are running low or need to be used soon.

"The grocery list everyone can add to is underrated. You stop being the only person who notices you're out of something."

Meal planning

The meal plan view shows the week day by day. Tap any day to add a meal — breakfast, lunch, dinner. Add the key ingredients. At the end of the week, or whenever you're ready to shop, those ingredients can flow directly into the grocery list. You fill in whatever else you need and the list is ready.

The shared grocery list

The grocery list is visible to the whole family. A teenager who notices you're out of their favorite snack can add it. A parent can mark items off as they shop. The list updates in real time so if two people are at the store at the same time, there's no confusion about what's already in the cart.

It's a small thing that removes a friction most families deal with every week. The mental load of tracking what the house needs gets distributed instead of sitting entirely with one person.
