Real conversation with kids doesn't always happen when you schedule it. But it also doesn't happen by accident. It usually needs a prompt — something that gives everyone permission to say what's actually on their mind, instead of the first safe answer that comes to mind.
The Campfire feature works like this: a parent starts a Campfire session and chooses tonight's question from a rotating set of prompts. The question appears on every family member's screen. Everyone gathers — ideally around a shared space, phones face down — talks through it together, then each person taps "I was here" to earn their stars and close out the session.
What the questions are designed to do
The Campfire questions aren't trivia or icebreakers. They're designed to surface what's actually going on — a worry a kid hasn't mentioned, something they're proud of, something they wish the family did more of. The questions rotate so no week feels the same.
Examples include: What made you laugh this week? What's something hard you're working through right now? What's the best part of being in this family? If you could change one thing about this week, what would it be?
How stars and Embers work here
Parents set how many stars each family member earns for showing up to a Campfire — anywhere from 1 to 5. When everyone participates, the record is saved. You can see past Campfires, who was there, and what the question was. Over time, it becomes a small archive of your family's conversations.
Completing Campfires regularly also contributes to your family's Ember balance — the long-term legacy score that reflects your family's consistency over time.
What it looks like in practice
As a parent, you open the Campfire tab, see tonight's question, optionally shuffle it if it doesn't feel right, and tap Start. Your kids' screens update immediately to show the question and a check-in button. You gather. You talk. Each person taps in when they're ready. The session closes and stars are awarded.
It doesn't have to be long. Fifteen minutes around the kitchen table, everyone present, one real question asked and answered — that's what it's built for.
